Chapter 1

Briar Thorne knelt on the highest slope of Mistral Peak and drove her fingers into the soil. She meant to wake the last garden that grew here, back when the mountain still knew flowers. Her hair was brambles and packed snow, and her hands did not feel cold. But the ground felt wrong. It gave nothing back. It was frozen hard as iron, dead all the way down. She pressed a seed into a crack and covered it. She breathed her sprite's magic over the spot, the same breath that could stir sleeping roots. Nothing moved. She tried another seed, then a third. The soil swallowed each one and gave no green. Briar dug deeper with a shard of ice. Two hands down, the dirt turned gray and crumbled like ash. No worms. No thread of root. The frost here was not winter's kind of cold. It had killed the ground and kept killing it. Nothing she planted would ever take. She sat back on her heels. She had crossed three ridges to reach this slope. Now the goal she came for lay locked under her own knees. "You are wasting good seed." Briar turned. A woman stood among the empty planters, though no feet had crunched the snow. Her skin was pale as the ice around them. Her black hair fell past a red dress that glittered like fresh snowfall. She did not quite touch the ground. Briar had heard the mountain tales. A princess had fled here long ago and died guarding this garden. Her spirit stayed. Briar rose slowly and kept her voice flat. "Then tell me why nothing grows." "The cold in this soil is grief, not weather," Celestine Ravenmoor said. She drifted to the dug hole and looked down at the gray dust. "It froze the day I died here. No seed can beat it alone." "I did not ask for company," Briar said. "I asked for an answer." The spirit's red eyes moved to her. For a moment something softened there. "The old blossoms are not gone. They sleep under the ice, waiting for warmth the winter cannot give." She pointed down the slope, toward a lower shelf where clear ice sheeted the ground. Faint pink shapes glimmered beneath it. Briar walked to the shelf and knelt. Under the ice she saw them, whole flowers held perfect and still, pink and red, caught mid-bloom. Not dead. Frozen. Waiting. "Warm the ground and they will rise," Celestine said behind her. "But cold like mine needs living fire, not a sprite's frost breath. You cannot make that." Briar pressed her palm to the ice. The trapped blossoms glowed faint at her touch. Her plan had failed, but she saw the shape of a new one now. "Then I will find something that can," she said, and stood.
