Chapter 2

Briar turned back from the ice shelf to plan her search, and the spirit was fainter than before. Celestine's red dress had gone thin as smoke. Briar could see the empty planters through her chest. "You are dimming," Briar said. "Fast." "I have lingered too long already." Celestine's voice came like wind through a crack. "When I fade, the garden's secrets go with me. You will not find the flowers alone. You will not know how to wake them." She lifted one pale hand and watched it blur. "Ask what you need. Quickly." Briar did not waste the breath. "You said cold like yours needs living fire. Where do I get it?" Celestine drifted toward the lower slope, weaker with each pull. "There is a cave, walls of ice tangled with old brambles. Inside stands a shrine to the one who first blessed this garden. A goddess of moon and ice. She lit the first fire that grew these blooms." The spirit's shape guttered like a low flame. "Go. Before I cannot point the way." Briar ran. She crossed the shelf and followed the spirit's failing gesture down to a mouth of jagged ice. Dead brambles laced its front. Red berries clung to the thorns. She pushed inside. The shrine stood at the far wall, pale stone crowned with crystal, a round moon carved at its heart. Briar knelt. She did not know the words for prayer. So she spoke plainly. "The garden is freezing. The one who kept it is fading. I need your fire." The carved moon brightened. Light gathered before the shrine and took a shape. A woman formed from it, silver hair falling past her feet, a crescent at her brow. She was faint, worn thin by long years alone. But her eyes fixed on Briar with sudden hope. "You come from the mountain," the goddess said. "From her." Her voice shook. "Is Celestine still there?" "She fades as we speak," Briar said. "She sent me here." The goddess pressed both hands to her chest. Old love moved across her face. "Then I will give what I have kept. Not for the flowers. For her." She raised one hand. A spark bloomed in her palm, warm and gold, wrapped in silver light. It leapt from her hand and shrank into a small shape. A fox kit landed on the cave floor. Its fur glowed like banked coals. A crescent marked its side, and pale flames curled at each paw. It looked up at Briar and yipped. "He carries my fire," the goddess said, already fading. "Living heat, enough to thaw her grief. Keep him close. He will melt what no frost can." Her light thinned and was gone. Briar scooped up the kit. Warmth spread through her cold hands. She turned and ran for the slope, the fox tucked against her chest. She had the fire now. But Celestine was fading, and Briar did not know if she would reach her in time.
