Chapter 3

Briar reached the garden with the fox kit warm against her chest. Celestine hovered over the frozen planters, thin as breath on glass. "You came back," the spirit said. "But I am almost gone. The fire alone will not hold me here. The garden needs a binding, or the blessing fails when I fade." "A binding?" Briar set the kit down. It sniffed at the ice and left small melted prints. "The goddess and I were bound by love," Celestine said. "That love kept the shrine's blessing alive. I carry no token of it now. Without one to tie to this ground, the warmth will not stay." Her voice thinned. "There is a thread that binds love to a fading heart. It grows on the unicorns, deep in the dark glade below. But the keeper there trusts no one." Briar ran downslope with the fox at her heels. The trees closed dark and cold. She found a clearing of pale stone arches and carved horses, ringed by bright flowers. Unicorns grazed inside, manes flowing in colors she had no names for. A tall fairy stepped between Briar and the herd. A crown of woven hair and white blossoms sat on her green locks. She did not raise her voice, but the unicorns went still at once. "You smell of frost and hurry," the fairy said. "Outsiders who rush always want something of mine. Turn around." "I need a strand of their hair," Briar said. "To bind a spirit before she vanishes." The fairy's eyes narrowed. "So you would pull from my herd to mend your own trouble." "The spirit guards a winter garden," Briar said. "She loved a goddess. That love kept a blessing alive. If she fades, it dies with her." Briar knelt and set the glowing fox on the stone. "This is the goddess's own fire. Given for love. I only ask for the thread that carries love. I am not taking. I am returning." The fox looked up at the fairy and yipped. Warmth spread across the cold ground. The fairy studied the crescent mark on its side. Her hard face loosened. "That is old moonlight," she said quietly. She stepped to the nearest unicorn and drew one shining strand from its tail. It gleamed with soft lunar color. "Bind it well, snow sprite. Waste it, and you answer to me." Briar closed her fingers around the thread and ran. She reached the garden as the last of Celestine's shape guttered. Briar knelt at the center stone. She looped the glowing strand around the cold planter and tied it fast, with the fox pressed close beside her. Light flared along the thread. It sank into the ice. Celestine's fading stopped. Her shape steadied, no brighter, but no dimmer. The shrine's blessing held. Warmth from the fox began to work at the frost, and beneath it, a first sleeping bloom showed a thread of pink.
