Brooke unlocked the heavy wooden doors and stepped inside her library. She ran the only one in Rust, and she meant to keep it stocked, no matter the road. The boy was already waiting outside, leaning against the broken statue of a woman holding a child that marked her front step. He came every morning. He never asked for anything. He just read what she handed him. She walked the aisles with her clipboard. Shelves full. Spines straight. One gap on the bottom row, third shelf from the door. She knelt and checked her ledger. A blue book. Deep leather, silver pressed into the cover like frost. She had seen the boy circling that empty slot for weeks, fingers brushing the wood where it should sit. He had asked for it once, quietly, months ago. She had written it down and not forgotten. Brooke closed the ledger. The coast was two weeks out. The university library held everything Goatshead did not. She stood up, dusted her knees, and started packing.
