Chapter 10

By morning the cart rolled up to a brick guard house at the edge of the next town. Two gatekeepers stepped out before Brooke could speak. They looked at her cart, her escorts, the boy. No name on their list matched hers. No local would vouch. The road behind was closed to her now, and the road ahead was a steel door. The older gatekeeper folded his arms. "No contact, no pass." Brooke kept her voice level. She gave them Sherrie's name. The man's mouth tightened, but he turned toward the guard house anyway. Inside sat a heavy military radio, dials worn smooth from use. The gatekeeper cranked it and spoke a call sign. Static. He tried again. Brooke watched the boy hold the blue-spined stack tighter. A third try. Then a low voice cut through the hiss — short words, no waste. Sherrie. She confirmed Brooke. She confirmed the cart. She said let her through. The gate swung open. As Brooke rolled past, she caught a glimpse of a man across the road in dark leather and a smoked helmet, leaning on a bike, watching the radio antenna. He did not move. He only smiled, small and patient, and thumbed something at his belt. Brooke marked the stop on her list and pushed the cart inside the walls. The town was open to her. But the spy had heard Sherrie's voice on an open channel, and Brooke knew, flat and certain, that she had just spent a favor that wasn't free.
