Chapter 20

By morning, Brooke had her answer. She crossed the library to the back shelter, where the checkpoint man slept on the cot. She woke him gently and offered him the job. He sat up slow, bandaged hand trembling, glasses crooked on his nose. "Desk work," she said. "Names and trades. Nothing more." He nodded once. By the time she unlocked the front door, he was already sorting the spilled ledger pages into neat stacks. The line outside reached past the corner. Weary faces in scarves and patched coats, breath fogging the cold air. Word from Webster's column had pulled them in from the southern track and farther. Brooke propped the door wide. The new clerk took his stool behind the desk, pencil ready, and began writing down what each person came for. They moved through the morning together. He logged titles. She pulled books. The crowd thinned into a steady shuffle, and for the first time in weeks the library felt like it was doing what it was built for. Then a young woman in a fur scarf and a yellow jacket stepped to the desk. She had a leather pack slung tight across her chest, the kind her clerk wore the same stitching on at his cuff. She looked up. Her eyes locked on the man behind the desk. The pencil dropped. Her mouth opened, closed, opened again. "Dad?" The word cracked out of her. She came around the desk before Brooke could move, arms around him, scarf pressed to his bandaged face. He held her like a man who had stopped believing in mornings. The whole line went quiet. Brooke stepped back and let them have it. She had wanted a clerk. She had gotten something larger. When the woman finally pulled away, wiping her face, she looked at Brooke and said she had been walking three towns looking. Brooke nodded toward the back shelter. "He stays here," she said. "You can too, if you work." The young woman pulled off her gloves and reached for the next book on the list. The library had two new hands now, and a secret that had just grown a witness.
