Chapter 26

The stranger at the door turned out to be a coffee seller. He wanted to set a small cart by her steps and pour cups for the readers. Brooke looked past him at the line already forming on the walk and said yes before he finished his pitch. By noon the cart was steaming. A weathered metal stand held umbrellas and stray pencils near the door. People dropped coins in the donation box and lingered on the stones outside. A young couple in dusty jackets shared a cup near the window. She held the paper sleeve in both hands. He leaned close and read over her shoulder from a borrowed book. They were not in a hurry. No one was. Brooke stepped back inside. Her clerk was sorting requests. His daughter shelved magazines under the window light. The new hires moved between the rows without needing her. The line at the door stretched longer, quiet and patient, breath fogging in the cold. She sat on the stool behind the desk and let her hands rest flat on the wood. For the first time in months there was nothing she had to fix. The library ran. The town came. The boy was somewhere on a bench with his blue book. Then the bearded merchant pushed through the line with a sack on his shoulder. He was two weeks early. He dropped the sack at her feet and said the next town over had burned. He had brought every book he could carry, and a hundred people were walking this way behind him.
