Chapter 28

Dawn came gray and loud. The survivors walked in by the dozens and settled around the library in a rough circle, packs at their feet, a small fire ring built from loose stones in the dirt. Children slept on coats. Adults watched the door. Brooke stood on the step and counted heads until she lost the number. Then she saw the books. They came out of every worn backpack she could see. Paperbacks tied with string. Loose pages wrapped in cloth. A bible without a cover. A ledger of recipes. One man held a thin manuscript like it was a child. The pile grew on a tarp by the donation box, soft-spined and water-stained, more knowledge than her shelves had room for. She had no way to track any of it. No cards. No catalog. No system fast enough for a crowd this size. The clerk looked up from his desk and waited. His daughter waited. The nine waited. Brooke walked to the back wall and lifted down a chalkboard she had pulled from an old storefront weeks ago. The frame was chipped orange and blue. She carried it outside and propped it on two crates by the fire ring. She wrote three columns in white chalk. NAME. BOOK. STORY. She called the first survivor forward. A woman in a torn coat. Brooke wrote her name, the title she carried, and one line about where it came from. Then the next. Then the next. The clerk brought a second board. His daughter brought a third. By midmorning, four boards stood in the dirt, filling with chalk, and the line still stretched past the magazine shelf she had dragged out for shade. By dusk every survivor had a line on a board. Every book had a name beside it. Brooke copied the boards into a fresh ledger by lamp and locked it in the back room. The town had grown by a hundred people and a hundred stories, and for the first time all day, she knew what had walked through her door.
