Chapter 2

Barnaby woke at dawn with a knot in his chest. Rent alone felt thin. A man should earn his place, not just pay for it. He pulled on his boots and stepped outside, looking for work his hands could do. He broke ground behind the cottage and planted a wide garden, rows of greens and bright fruit climbing every trellis. Down at the water's edge, he sank timber posts and built a sturdy dock. Then he shaped a small fishing boat with a sharp prow and a patched sail. Each morning he rowed out and came back with full nets. The widow sold what they could not eat, and coins began to fill a small jar on the shelf. The little girl followed him everywhere. He taught her knots, tides, and the names of stars. In the quiet hours, he pressed a smooth stick into her hand and showed her how to hold a cutlass, just for safety. She learned faster than any deckhand he had known. At night, he and the widow sat by the lamp and spoke until the candle guttered, both shaking their heads at the child's quick mind. One evening the widow set a warm plate before him and rested her hand on his shoulder. "You are not a boarder anymore," she said. "You are family." Barnaby lowered his eyes and nodded. The fear of being asked to leave slipped off him like an old coat.
