Chapter 3

A week after the widow named him family, Barnaby noticed a shadow on the path. The carved signpost at the bend always caught the morning light, and now a figure stood beside it each dawn, watching the cottage. Down at the docks, word had traveled fast. At the old tavern with the ship wheel above its door, sailors had been trading his name over mugs. Barnaby learned this from the widow, who heard it at market. His chest tightened. He had wanted only wind in the trees. He decided to face the watcher himself. He walked the path with steady steps, one hand loose at his side. The stranger did not run. In his palm sat a small wooden box, its panel cracked, a thin tune leaking out. "I knew your first mate," the stranger said. "He gave me this before he died. Said you'd know the song." Barnaby listened. He did know it. An old watch tune, hummed on long nights at sea. He took the box, closed the lid gently, and the music stopped. "Tell the docks the captain is retired," Barnaby said. "And tell them I keep a sharp blade and a quick student." The stranger nodded once and walked away. Barnaby stood alone by the signpost, the silent box heavy in his hand, knowing now that the sea had found his path, and would send others.
