Chapter 1

Cassia found the name tucked under a cutting board she alone rotated to prevent warping. It was written on the back of an order slip in pencil, neat and deliberate: Demeter. Not a warning. Not an accusation. A question someone expected only her to answer. She held the slip between her thumb and forefinger, turning it toward the light from the window where ivy climbed the frame. The handwriting wasn't rushed. Whoever left it had taken their time, had known her habits well enough to place it where no one else would look. The shelves above the counter held jars of spices and dried herbs, their labels facing out in careful rows. A red-checkered cloth hung from the drawer below. Everything in this corner of the kitchen belonged to her system, her rhythm. The person who wrote this name knew that. They knew she would find it alone, and they knew what it would cost her to read it. She folded the slip once and slipped it into her apron pocket. The question had been asked. Now she had to decide whether answering it would protect her kitchen or destroy it. She walked to the desk where she kept her grandmother's recipes, the one place she went when the kitchen needed something she couldn't measure or time. The carved surface was smooth under her palms. Her grandmother had fed strangers from her own plate during the famine. Cassia had fed a dangerous person twice, knowing what they were, and kept silent about it after. The suspect who left this name wanted to know if she was still keeping that silence. If she was still protecting someone who didn't deserve protection. Cassia pulled the slip from her pocket and set it on the desk beside a bowl of lemons. The name sat there, patient and waiting. She couldn't keep the question to herself anymore. Someone in her kitchen would be hurt tonight if she did. The law of xenia demanded she protect everyone under her roof, but protection required knowing who needed it most. She had made her choice the moment she unfolded the slip. Now she had to speak it aloud. She left the desk and walked into the main kitchen where the long table stood, the one her guests ate at every night. Its polished surface caught the afternoon light. This table was her law made solid, the place where she had fed the dangerous and the desperate without asking which they were. But silence had limits. Her suspect was somewhere in the building, waiting to see if she would answer the question or pretend she never found it. Cassia touched the edge of the table once, then turned toward the door. She would find them before service tonight. She would say the name aloud and watch what happened when she did.
