Chapter 2

Cassia checked the walk-in first, then the office, then the narrow hallway where deliveries came through. She moved through each space methodically, expecting to search. But when she pushed open the door to the dry storage room, someone was already there. They sat in the bay window seat with the late afternoon light behind them, hands folded in their lap. Waiting. Not startled. Not caught. The carved recipe box her grandmother had used for storing dried beans sat open on the cushion beside them, and on top of it lay a slip of paper. The suspect looked at her without speaking, then gestured toward the note with one hand. Cassia crossed the room and picked it up. The handwriting matched the first slip exactly, the same deliberate cursive: She's not safe. Three words she had never written. Three words meant to look like an answer to the question they'd asked her. Cassia set the note back down on the box. "I didn't write this," she said. The suspect nodded slowly, as if they'd been waiting for her to say it. "I know," they said. "But someone will think you did. Someone already does." Their voice was calm, tired. "You stayed quiet about Demeter before. They think you'll cover for her again. They think you already are." Cassia felt the weight of it settle into her chest. Someone else in the kitchen believed she'd sent a warning. Someone else thought her silence was protection, not principle. The suspect met her eyes. "I left the first note to see if you'd speak. I left this one to show you what happens if you don't." Cassia picked up the forged note and folded it once. She understood now. Her suspect wasn't covering for someone they loved. They were trying to force her hand before someone else got hurt using her silence as a weapon. The law of xenia required protection, but protection only worked when people knew where the danger was. She had kept her knowledge contained, believing it wasn't hers to share. Now someone had weaponized that containment against her. She looked at the person sitting in the window. "Who thinks I wrote this?" she asked. They told her a name. Cassia nodded once and turned toward the door. She would have to break her silence tonight, not because she'd chosen to, but because staying quiet had become its own kind of harm. The choice had already been taken from her. All that was left was the cost.
