Chapter 2
The gate held. The horde clawed the far side and gave up. But the mind deep inside the fortress stayed awake, and Celestara felt it fix on her like a hand pressed to glass. She could not stay by the gate forever. She had to know what shared these walls with her.
She stood and wiped the dust from her face. The crystal halls stretched ahead, purple stone lit by pale light through tall windows. She walked toward the presence. Her boots echoed. With each step the mind grew louder, not in words, but in weight. It knew her name. It knew her blood.
She reached inside its thoughts the way she read any mind. Most minds gave her pictures and fear. This one gave her a wall. Smooth. Old. It let her feel its edges and nothing more. That control frightened her more than the horde had.
"Show yourself," she said. Her voice cracked. "I know you are here."
The light in the far wall shifted. A shape gathered inside the crystal, tall and thin, made of the same purple stone as the fortress. It had no face she could name. It turned toward her, and its attention settled on her chest, where her heart beat too fast.
"You are Veylin," the presence said. The voice came from the walls, from the floor, from the air. "The last one. I have waited a long time."
Celestara did not run. She had nowhere left to run. She met the shape and pushed her mind against its wall with all she had. "Waited to help me, or to finish what killed my family?"
The wall in its mind cracked. For one breath she saw behind it. She saw her mother, young, standing where Celestara stood now. She saw a bargain made a thousand years ago. The fortress was not empty. It had been sworn to guard the Veylin line, and it had been sleeping, waiting for the blood to return.
"I was bound to your family," the presence said. "Your enemies cannot pass my gate. But I do not give my strength for free. I gave it once, and your ancestors paid a price."
"What price?" Celestara asked.
The shape stepped from the wall and stood before her, solid now, cold air rolling off its stone skin. "Your service. Bind yourself to me, and the fortress arms you. Refuse, and I open the gate."
Celestara thought of the throne. She thought of the horde outside, patient, tracking her mind through the stone. She had run for days with nothing. Now something offered her a weapon, and a chain.
She held out her hand. "I bind myself. Give me what I need to take back my throne."
The stone shape closed cold fingers around her wrist. Light ran up her arm. She felt the fortress wake fully around her, every wall alive, every window an eye. The presence was hers now. And she was its.
