Chapter 3

The light stayed in Celestara's arm long after the stone shape let go. Power hummed under her skin. It felt like a chain, not a gift. She flexed her fingers and waited for the presence to speak. It did not make her wait long. "You are bound now," the walls said. "I ask my first service." A purple cat trotted into the hall then, tail high, weaving around her boots. She had found it hiding in the fortress days ago, and it had followed her ever since. It looked up at her and chirped a question, ears turned toward the voice in the stone. "Deep below this floor lies a well of old power," the presence said. "It is sealed by living blood. Yours will open it. Cut your hand and feed the stone. Then I am fully awake, and your enemies fall." Celestara knelt and touched the floor. Under her palm she felt a slow, hungry pulse. She pushed her mind against the presence and hit its wall again. But a crack had opened when they bonded. Through it she saw the truth. The well did not want a few drops. It wanted her, poured out slowly, over years. Servitude meant her life, spent one task at a time. The cat pressed against her leg and hissed at the floor. It felt the hunger too. "Refuse," the presence warned, "and the bond tears. The power I gave keeps your heart beating now. Break it, and you die where you kneel." Celestara believed it. Her heart already beat to the fortress rhythm, not her own. She had traded her life for a weapon, and now the seller wanted payment. She thought of the horde outside, patient, tracking her mind. She thought of the throne. Neither was worth being drained into stone by inches. She drew the small knife from her belt. The presence's attention warmed, pleased. She turned the blade and pressed the flat of it against her own bound wrist, where the light still glowed. "You said blood opens the well," she said. "You never said whose task it must be first." She reached into the crack in its wall and shoved everything she had through it. Not to break the bond. To bend it. The pact ran both ways. She was its servant, but it had sworn to guard Veylin blood, and her blood now filled its stones. She fed it one drop, only one, and with it a command. "Serve me first. Then I serve you." The fortress shook. The presence roared inside the walls, furious, and could not refuse its own oath. The light in her arm flared white. The cat yowled and bolted. The pulse under the floor went quiet. Celestara stood, wrist bleeding, alive. The bond held, but it had shifted. She had not escaped the chain. She had grabbed the other end. Above her, deep in the stone, she felt the presence turn its rage toward the gate, and the horde beyond it.
