Chapter 3

The shrine notes burned in her mind all night. By morning Celestria knew guessing was the same as bleeding. She needed to hear court voices in the open, with their guards down, and she needed a way to sort friend from blade without ever writing the wrong name on paper. She chose a small latticed pavilion at the edge of the wood, where the cloth panels bent sound in strange ways. A whisper at one wall arrived clean at another. She set out tea and low cushions and let word slip, through Elara, that a quiet place had opened for any who wished to speak away from court ears. On a stand near the door she placed a silver-framed mirror, draped in pale cloth. A gift, she would say, for the first guest brave enough to claim it. The mirror was bait. Who reached for it, who refused, who asked its price — each answer told her something a sworn oath would not. They came in ones and twos across the afternoon. An elf captain who would not sit. A fairy steward who sat too quickly. A scribe who spoke of weariness, then of names. Celestria poured tea and listened from the far wall, where the cloth carried every word back to her in full. In her sleeve she turned a small ringed puzzle, its bands engraved with court names. Each time a voice marked itself, she rotated a band. Allies in, threats out. No ink. No list to find. By dusk the rings had aligned. Four names she could trust on the elf side. Three on the fairy. Two she had been certain of were now turned outward, marked as danger. She had been about to write to one of them. She left the pavilion with a glowing quill still dry in her bag and a colder map in her head. Elara met her on the path and read her face in one glance. "You have your names." Celestria nodded. "And two I would have trusted by tomorrow." The wind moved through the trees. The plan was still alive. But the circle of people who could break it had just become people she knew by name.
