Chapter 4

The names were hers now, but names alone would not hold. Seven strangers, scattered between two courts, who had never seen one another's faces. Celestria sat with Elara at dawn and said it plainly. "When the moment comes, they must know each other on sight. One wrong glance and the circle breaks." Elara only nodded. She had already guessed. Celestria chose a house at the edge of the wood, built long ago for talks between the two courts. It had two doors, one on each side, and a wide hall between. She staggered the meetings by the hour. A fairy at midmorning. An elf at noon. Neither would cross the other's path. From her own gemstones she had shaped seven small brooches. Each held a bright stone framed in pale metal, twin leaves curling around it — half elf, half fairy, plain to anyone who knew. To anyone who did not, only jewelry. She set them in a box of dark cloth and waited. Aurelia Starweaver came first through the fairy door. She studied the brooch a long moment before lifting it. "A pattern," she said quietly. "Two leaves. One stone." Celestria met her eyes. "When you see this on another, that is a hand you may take." Aurelia pinned it beneath her collar. "I will watch for the light of it." She left without another word. Sylvia Nightrose came next, through the elf door, and held the brooch in both palms like a seedling. "I will wear it," she said slowly, "close to where things grow." One by one the others came. Six brooches left the box. The seventh she did not give. That one she carried herself, past the house and into the trees, to a carved bench she had cleaned and set facing the deeper wood. She laid the brooch on the seat, wrapped in a square of cloth, and weighed it down with a stone. The ally for this one had been chosen but not yet approached. The bench would speak first. Walking back, Elara fell in beside her. "Six wear the sign. One waits." Celestria nodded. The circle had a shape now. Seven people who could find each other in a crowd. But six brooches in the open meant six chances for the wrong eye to learn the mark — and somewhere in the courts, two enemies already knew her name.
