Chapter 2

Chaos knelt beside the statue and traced one finger along a carved line connecting two figures. The stone felt cold under their touch. Building places was easy—getting gods to actually use them was different. They needed to start small, with someone who might listen. Hestia would come if asked. Maybe Hestia could convince others. Chaos stood and walked back toward the twisted tree, already composing the words they'd whisper through dreams tonight. But first, they needed to understand the full scope of what they were attempting. Chaos walked through the forest until they found themselves standing before a grand building. Tall columns rose toward the sky, covered in intricate carvings. They stepped inside and ran their hands along the shelves. Records of lineage filled the space—bloodlines, births, betrayals. Chaos pulled down scroll after scroll, spreading them across the stone floor. So many connections. So many fractures. They traced each branch of the family with careful attention, marking who spoke to whom, who refused to see each other. The work took hours. As evening approached, Chaos returned to the temple entrance. Darkness would make it harder for anyone to find this place. They needed light—something permanent. Chaos shaped metal with their hands, twisting it into patterns that echoed the temple's design. The lantern caught fire from their touch and burned steady. They placed it near the entrance where its glow would guide visitors through the trees. The warm light pushed back the shadows. One more thing felt necessary before anyone arrived. Chaos walked the perimeter until they found a natural depression in the ground. Water bubbled up from some hidden spring. They shaped the earth around it, forming a pool ringed with smooth stone. Visitors would need to wash away old anger before entering sacred space. Chaos dipped their fingers in the water. It ran clear and cold. They stood and looked back at everything they'd built—the library of family history, the welcoming light, the pool of preparation. The pieces were ready. Now came the truly hard part: actually bringing the family together.
