Chapter 5

The mouse healed under the great willow, and the guardian's words still hung between them. He liked her. But he would not ask her to stay until she knew his world. So he asked her to spend a day at his side. Clover said yes. Morning came bright and cool, and she followed him into the grove she had only watched from below. He worked without pause. He knelt to press moss over a cracked stone where new shoots pushed through. He held still while a pale mouse with oversized ears climbed his arm and sniffed his ear. Clover watched his hands and tried to learn his rhythm. She fed the mouse a seed. It stayed in her palm. She felt useful. She felt close to him. Then a pink shape darted from the branches. A tiny fairy, no taller than Clover's hand, hovered at eye level. Flowers crowned her hair. Her wings shimmered. This was Flower, one of the grove's small keepers, and she did not smile. "You brought a stranger," Flower said to the guardian. She circled Clover once, fast. "She smells of the world below. Bread. Smoke. A cottage." Her small face pinched. "Those things fade up here. Does she know that?" Clover's chest tightened. She had eaten breakfast in her kitchen that morning. She had not thought it clung to her. A fox-woman stepped from the ferns then, blond hair loose, a red-striped tail sweeping the moss. Kitsune Amberlight. Clover knew her kind now, though not this one. The fox-woman studied her with amber eyes. "The last human who lingered here wept for her old life every night," Amberlight said. "She left before winter. The grove doesn't take half a heart." She tilted her head. "Which are you?" Clover looked at the guardian. He said nothing. He was letting the grove test her, the way the fox-woman by the stream once tested her. Her hands shook. But the mouse still sat in her palm, calm, trusting her. A fawn limped into the clearing, one hind leg bent wrong. The guardian moved toward it. Clover moved faster. She knelt, steadied the leg, and murmured the way she would to any frightened thing. The fawn stilled. Her hands did not shake now. Flower drifted closer and watched. Amberlight's tail slowed. "Bark and moss," Clover said. "Bind above the break." She looked up at the guardian. "I know this. Not because I'm from below. Because I chose to learn it beside you." The guardian knelt and worked with her. Flower fetched a strip of bark without a word. When the splint held, Amberlight dipped her head. "Half a heart couldn't do that," the fox-woman said. She stepped back into the ferns and was gone. The guardian took Clover's hand. "You belong here today," he said. "That was never the question." His eyes held hers. "The question is whether you can leave the rest behind. And that, you still have to choose."
