Chapter 6

The splint held on the fawn's leg, and the guardian's words held in Clover's chest. She could stay today. But the sun was already sliding low behind the great willow. Soon the grove would go dark. She had no bed here, no roof, no corner to call hers. Below the grove waited her cottage, warm and known. Up here she was a guest with nowhere to sleep. The guardian saw the question in her face before she spoke it. "Night comes fast in the grove," he said. "Where will you rest?" He did not offer his own tree. She understood. A gift given too easily meant nothing. She had to make a place of her own. "Then I'll build one," Clover said. "Tonight." The guardian studied her, then dipped his head and stepped back to let her try. She walked the grove looking for shelter. Every hollow was claimed. Every den had eyes inside it. Panic pushed at her. Then a mushroom woman rose from a patch of caps at the tree line, spores clinging to her hands like flour. Braids of pink hair swung as she straightened. This was Myra Sporecap. Clover had never met her, but she knew the look people gave strange women. She would not give it. "You need a place," Myra said. Not a question. "I do," Clover said. "By dark." Myra wiped her hands on her grassy skirt. "There's a house past the ferns. Fox shaped roof. A den-woman built it and left it. The grove kept it standing." She pointed with a spore-dusted finger. "Empty. Waiting." Clover found it in the last light. The house wore a fox's face, two carved ears on the roof, a curling tail at one corner. Wood joints tight, windows glowing faintly with grove-shine. But dust filled the floor and vines choked the door. No one had wanted it in years. "It's cold," Clover said. "Cold houses warm," Myra said. "If someone stays." She knelt and pressed a mushroom into a crack by the step. It flushed pink and gave off soft light. "Living things make a home. Not walls." Clover worked. She swept the floor. She pulled the vines from the door and wove them into a mat instead. Myra planted glowing caps along the sill until the rooms held a gentle light. The fox-house breathed warmer with every task Clover finished. When the last cap bloomed, Clover stood in her doorway. The grove was full dark now. Her cottage below felt very far. This roof was hers. The guardian came through the ferns. He stopped when he saw the light in the fox-shaped windows. "You made a home," he said. Something shifted in his eyes, softer than praise. "I have somewhere to stay now," Clover said. "In the grove. Near you." He reached the step but did not cross it. "Then it's real," he said quietly. "You're truly staying. Which means your old cottage sits empty tonight. And someone below will notice."
