Chapter 4

Cobalt sent word to the rival pack before dawn. The woman — Kiara, she'd told him her name while they waited — stood near the window watching the treeline. She hadn't slept. Neither had he. The reply came with the sun, delivered by a gray wolf who shifted just long enough to speak. The meeting would happen at noon, neutral ground between the cabin and the ridge. All three factions. Cobalt looked at Kiara when the messenger left. "They know about the third group?" She nodded. "Everyone knows. That's why they agreed." The clearing sat empty when they arrived, marked only by the moonstone egg placed at its center. Cobalt brought three of his pack. Kiara came alone. The rival pack arrived from the north — four werewolves led by the largest one who'd offered him shelter. They formed a loose half-circle but didn't sit. Minutes passed. Then figures emerged from the eastern treeline, moving too smoothly to be wolves. Five of them, pale-skinned and dressed in old-world clothes that should have been ruined by the forest. The lead vampire carried a garnet bat amulet on a chain, twin to the one that had been pinned to Kiara's door. She set it on the ground near the moonstone egg like a claim. Cobalt felt his pack tense behind him. The vampire who'd set down the amulet smiled without warmth. "The cabin was a generous gift. We'll be taking it." The largest werewolf growled low. "That shelter was ours to give. You've claimed the ridge. That's enough." Cobalt watched them face off and understood what Kiara had been running from — not random violence but a calculated push into occupied ground. The vampires weren't a third faction. They were a house, old enough to wear amulets and young enough to want new territory. He stepped forward and pulled a black choker from his pocket, the one Kiara had left on the cabin table that morning. He set it beside the moonstone egg. "She's with us now. The cabin stays ours, and she gets protection." Kiara stiffened but didn't speak. The lead vampire looked at the choker, then at Kiara, then back at Cobalt. "You're sheltering a deserter?" Cobalt met her eyes and didn't move. "I'm sheltering someone who needs it." The silence stretched until the largest werewolf barked a short laugh. "Fine. They keep the cabin. You keep the ridge. We keep the forest. Nobody crosses without permission." The vampire's smile faded, but she picked up her amulet and stepped back. "Agreed. For now." They left the way they came, smooth and silent. The werewolves followed more slowly, the largest one pausing to nod at Cobalt before disappearing into the trees. Kiara exhaled hard. "You just made me part of your pack." Cobalt picked up the choker and handed it to her. "You were already asking. I just answered." She took it, fingers shaking slightly, and fastened it around her neck. He'd gained an ally, drawn a boundary, and learned what the third faction wanted. His pack still needed more than a cabin, but now he knew who'd fight them for it — and who might stand aside.
