Chapter 5

Cobalt walked the perimeter of the cabin three times before the factions left the clearing. The agreement held for now, but agreements needed weight. Kiara had followed him back without speaking, and the rest of his pack waited inside. He gathered his people at the fork in the path where snow still lay smooth and untouched. Seventeen faces watched him in the cold morning light. "We build today," he said. "Not inside — outside." He pointed to the clearing between the cabin and the treeline. "We need a place to stand if someone tests us. Stone and ice, strong enough to hold." Three of his wolves shifted without waiting for orders and began hauling rocks from the frozen creek bed. The vampires cut blocks of ice from the ridge's edge using old tools they'd carried from the warehouse. Kiara worked beside them without her amulet, just another pair of hands. By midday they'd raised a low stone wall with ice mortared between the gaps, arched at the center like a den's mouth. It wouldn't stop an army, but it would force anyone approaching to choose — go around and lose the element of surprise, or come through and face seventeen people with cover. Cobalt set the moonstone egg at the base of the arch and packed fresh snow around it until the surface gleamed. A marker, like the ones the other factions had left. Not a boundary stone but a declaration: this ground was claimed, and his pack intended to keep it. Two of his youngest began laying flat stones in a half-circle around the arch, creating a gathering point where the pack could assemble fast if needed. The split in the path now led to the cabin on one side and the fortified position on the other — a choice his people could make in seconds. Kiara stood beside him as the sun dropped toward the ridge. "The vampire house will see this before nightfall," she said. Cobalt nodded. "Good. Let them see it." She pulled her choker tighter and looked at the arch, the stones, the moonstone gleaming in the snow. "You're not just sheltering us. You're holding ground." He met her eyes and understood what she was really asking — whether he'd flinch when the cost came due. "I'm holding what's ours," he said. The arch stood solid behind them, and his pack moved inside for the night. The window for fortifying had closed, but the work was done. When the first rival came to test the agreement, they'd find more than a cabin full of outcasts. They'd find a pack with a position worth defending.
