Chapter 6

The arch had stood for two days when they came. Cobalt saw the movement first — a werewolf walking alone from the forest, and a woman in dark clothing approaching from the ridge. They stopped at opposite ends of the clearing, waiting. He recognized the stance: not a challenge, but a request. Cobalt stepped through the arch and gestured them forward. The werewolf approached with steady steps — not the guard from before, but someone older, carrying himself like a leader. The woman wore the garnet bat amulet at her throat, the same one he'd seen at the territorial meeting. They stopped three paces from the arch, neither trying to claim the space first. The werewolf spoke without preamble. "I'm Arrow. This is Mirabelle." He nodded toward the vampire leader. "We came to ask you something." Mirabelle reached into her coat and withdrew a folded document, setting it on a round cherry wood table that hadn't been there before — Arrow must have carried it from the forest. The surface gleamed dark red in the winter light. "We've been talking," she said. "The three of us holding separate ground doesn't make sense anymore. Too many threats, not enough resources." Arrow crossed his arms. "We want to build something bigger. One community, three factions under one roof. A manor east of here — big enough for all of us, neutral ground." Cobalt looked at the document, then at them. They were offering him exactly what his pack needed: permanent shelter, allies, protection. But it meant giving up the independence he'd fought to keep, folding his people into something he didn't control. He picked up the document and read it slowly. The terms were fair — shared leadership, equal voice for all three factions, his pack protected under the same agreement that bound the others. It solved the shelter problem. It secured his people's future. But it also meant trusting two leaders who'd nearly fought over this same ground days ago. Cobalt set the paper down and met their eyes. "I need to bring this to my pack first," he said. "If they agree, we'll come." Arrow nodded. Mirabelle picked up the document and handed it to him. "Two days," she said. "Then we start building with or without you." They left the clearing the same way they'd come, and Cobalt stood alone at the arch holding the future his people needed — if he could convince them to take it.
