Chapter 7

Cobalt called the meeting at the arch that afternoon. All seventeen stood in the clearing while he explained the offer — a manor, shared leadership, permanent shelter. He watched their faces as he spoke, looking for doubt or fear, but found only exhaustion and hope. Kiara stepped forward before anyone else could speak. "There's a condition they didn't put in the document," she said. "Mirabelle wants the vampires from your pack transferred to her authority. Arrow wants the werewolves under his command. It's a gesture of good faith — proof you're not building a rival faction inside their walls." She met Cobalt's eyes without flinching. "They want your pack dissolved before you walk through that door." Cobalt looked at the seventeen people who'd followed him through fire and snow. They'd survived because they stayed together, because he'd refused to let anyone else decide their worth. Now the price of shelter was exactly that — surrender the thing that made them whole. One by one, they nodded. Not because they wanted to leave, but because they trusted him enough to know this was the only path forward. The werewolves walked toward the forest where Arrow's pack waited. The vampires headed for the ridge where Mirabelle stood. Cobalt watched them go, seventeen paths diverging across the clearing, footprints spreading across the herringbone pattern of packed snow and frozen earth that marked where they'd built their wall together. When the clearing emptied, only Kiara remained. She picked up the agreement parchment from where Cobalt had set it on the ground and held it out to him. "They kept me because I chose you first," she said quietly. "That still counts." Cobalt took the document and folded it once, the formal script disappearing into the crease. He'd led his pack to shelter — not the way he'd imagined, but the way the world demanded. They were protected now, fed and housed under a roof that wouldn't burn. But they were no longer his to lead, and he would enter that manor as something he'd never been before: a leader with no one left to follow him but one.
