Chapter 8

Kiara walked beside him toward the cabin, her boots crunching through the thin crust of ice that had formed over yesterday's footprints. She slowed when they reached the door, one hand resting on the frame. "Arrow wanted me to tell you something," she said. "You're always welcome here. With the pack, with the clan — both groups are allies now. That includes you." She stepped inside, leaving the door open behind her. The warmth from the fireplace spilled out into the cold air, carrying the scent of pine and smoke. Cobalt stood on the threshold, watching her silhouette move toward the hearth. The offer hung in the air between them — shelter without condition, a place among people who'd already claimed their ground. But he'd never been good at joining what others had built. The door stayed open. Kiara didn't look back. She knew him well enough to leave the choice where it belonged. Cobalt turned from the A-frame cabin and walked back toward the clearing. The herringbone pattern of packed snow and frozen earth stretched beneath his boots, each angled piece marking where his pack had worked together to build something that mattered. The arch still stood at the far end, its stones holding firm against the wind. He stopped halfway across, equidistant from the cabin's warmth and the monument his people had left behind. He could walk back through that open door. Arrow's pack would make room for him, and Kiara wouldn't have to explain why she'd stayed loyal to someone with no followers left. The manor would become his home, and he'd learn to lead from the margins of someone else's authority. It was shelter. It was safety. It was everything he'd fought for since the warehouse burned. But standing here on the patterned ground his pack had made, Cobalt knew the answer that had been building since he watched seventeen people walk away. He looked at the cabin one last time, then turned toward the arch. The herringbone path led him forward, away from the light spilling through Kiara's open door. He'd brought his pack to shelter — that part was finished. But protecting werewolves and vampires in need didn't require him to stop being the person who'd started. There would be others, eventually. People the factions wouldn't claim, losses the clans wouldn't count. When they came looking for someone who didn't flinch, he'd be standing right here. The cabin door closed behind him with a soft click. Kiara had made her choice. Now he'd made his. Cobalt reached the arch and placed his hand on the moonstone egg at its base. The stone was cold but solid, anchored in ground his people had claimed together. He'd led them to safety, and they'd trusted him enough to let him walk away. That was the cost of being the kind of leader who refused to join what others built — you stood alone when the building was done. But alone wasn't the same as finished. He left his palm on the marker for one more breath, then stepped past the arch into the contested territory beyond. Somewhere out there, the next fire was already burning.
