Chapter 9

Cobalt shifted as he crossed the arch, bones reorganizing under fur that caught the wind differently than skin ever had. Four legs carried him faster than two, and the contested ground opened up in ways he'd forgotten while standing upright and negotiating terms. He ran the perimeter first, testing boundaries he'd only walked before. The eastern ridge rose sharp against the sky where Mirabelle's people held their claim. The forest line marked Arrow's territory, dense with scent markers that warned him back. Between them lay the open ground — his ground now — and the freedom of it hit harder than he expected. No one was coming to tell him where he could or couldn't go. No one was waiting for him to choose their safety over his judgment. The choice he'd been postponing since the warehouse burned crystallized with each stride: he was staying here, alone if necessary, to hold this ground for whoever came next. He stopped near a fallen tree at the clearing's edge and shifted back. His boots sank into mud that hadn't frozen yet, leaving prints beside older tracks his pack had made when they still existed. He pulled the choker from his pocket — black leather with a spade charm that had belonged to someone who left with the others. They'd forgotten it in the cabin, and he'd picked it up without thinking. Now he pressed it into the mud beside the largest paw print, pushing it deep enough that the next snow wouldn't take it. Not a monument. Just proof that people had been here, and someone remembered. Cobalt found the tree stump fifty yards from the arch and tested its surface with one hand. Smooth enough. Solid. He sat and watched the contested ground spread out before him, no longer wondering if he'd made the right choice. The arch stood at his back. The mud held his tracks. The choker marked where his pack had walked before they scattered to safer ground. He wasn't building something new here — he was holding the door open. When the next person came looking for a leader who didn't flinch, they'd find him right here, watching the spaces between claimed territories where the unwanted always appeared first.
