Chapter 10

Mikhael carried Dagna home from the cave. He laid her on the furs at the back of the hollow, where the cold kept the marked hides safe. The wolf curled beside her, its thick coat blocking the warm air. Dagna's hands shook now. She could no longer grip a blade. She could read every mark her people had ever cut, but her fingers would carve no more. "You must make a full record," she said. Her voice was thin. "Not copy. Not read. Carve. Your own hand, start to end." Mikhael's face went pale. "I've only ever traced yours. I've cut single marks in ice. Never a whole record." "Then cut one now." She pointed at the block of blue ice in the shadowed rear. "While I can still watch." He dragged the block into the light. He knelt with his knife and the stack of marked hides beside him. He chose the words from the cave. Ice holds the deep memory. He began to carve. Dagna watched each stroke. Her heart wanted to call out corrections. She held her tongue. Her strength was gone. If she guided his hand, the record would still be hers, not his. He had to fail or succeed alone. Mikhael cut the first row clean. He joined two marks, sharing a stroke, the way she had shown him. He paused at the third. His blade hovered. He set it against the ice, then pulled back. "That one is wrong," Dagna whispered. She could not stop herself. But she said no more. She would not lift a finger. Mikhael looked at the ice a long time. He looked at the hides. Then he found the error himself. He smoothed the bad cut flat with his thumb and the flat of the blade. He carved it again. This time the join held. He worked through the day. The wolf slept. A raven with white-marked wings landed at the cave mouth and watched, then flew off. Mikhael did not stop. He cut row after row, smoothing his mistakes, recutting until each line was true. When the light dimmed, he sat back. The blue block held a full record in his own hand. Every mark stood clean. Dagna dragged herself up on one elbow and read it. She read every word. Not one was false. "It's whole," she said. "You made it whole. Without me." Mikhael wiped his eyes. "You caught the one." "No." She shook her head. "You caught it. I only spoke. You could have done it deaf." She sank back on the furs. Something in her chest eased. The knowledge was no longer trapped in her failing body. It lived in his hands now. But the ice would not last. A warm wind, a single thaw, and his record would melt to water. Dagna stared at the block. It shone clear and blue. "Now," she said, "you must cut it in stone. Ice forgets. Stone keeps."
