Chapter 11

The blue ice block held Mikhael's record. But it would melt. Dagna lay on the furs and stared at it. Stone would keep the marks. One pair of hands would not. She counted the winters ahead. Mikhael was young, but young men die. A fever, a fall, a bad hunt. One lost winter and every mark her people ever cut would go dark. She had given all her knowledge to one boy. That was not enough. "Mikhael," she said. "You must teach." He looked up from the marked hides. Charcoal pens lay scattered where he had worked. "Teach who? There is no one else." "There will be." Dagna lifted one shaking hand toward the hollow's mouth. "Bring her." Mikhael went out. He came back with a girl in patched furs. She stood in the cold with her chin up, arms crossed. She was no more than twelve. Nora Hatch. She had come to Dagna's hollow twice before to trade dried fish, and both times she had lingered at the ice, tracing the cut marks with one finger. "I know you," Dagna said. "You touch the ice when you think I sleep." Nora's face went red. "I wasn't stealing." "No. You were reading. Without knowing how." Dagna's mouth twitched. "Sit." Nora sat. The wolf raised its head, watched her, then lowered it. Dagna nodded at Mikhael. "Show her the first mark. The simple one." Mikhael hesitated. "I've never taught. Only learned." "Then you will learn to teach." Dagna's voice was thin but hard. "If you can carve a record from memory, you can hand it to another. Do it now, while I watch." Mikhael knelt beside Nora. He drew a mark in charcoal on a fresh hide. "This means ice," he said. He drew a second. "This means cold. Join them. They share a stroke." His hand moved slow and sure. Nora leaned close. Dagna watched them both. She saw Mikhael's old fear in Nora's frown, the same doubt he once had. She saw him meet it. He did not carve for her. He waited. Nora took the charcoal and copied the join. Her first try was wrong. She smudged it and tried again. The second held. "Good," Mikhael said. He did not touch her hand. Nora read it aloud. "Deep cold." "Deep cold," Mikhael agreed. He smiled. Dagna sank into the furs. Her chest eased, the way it had eased the day Mikhael made the record whole. The knowledge no longer sat in one pair of hands. It sat in two, and one of them was learning to pass it on. A lost winter could no longer erase everything. "Now," Dagna whispered, "there are two who can carve the stone. Begin."
