Chapter 12

The next morning Nora came back on her own. She sat by the marked hides and copied joins until her fingers were black with charcoal. Dagna watched from the furs. The girl learned fast. Too fast. Mikhael had struggled for weeks and made every mark his own. Nora copied shapes in a day. But copying was not knowing. Dagna had seen tracers before, hands that drew perfect marks and read nothing. If Nora only aped the strokes, the knowledge would rot inside her. And Dagna had no strength left to test her. She could barely lift her arm. "Mikhael," Dagna said. "Come here." He knelt beside her. His young face was tired from teaching. She spoke low so Nora would not hear. "I cannot test her. Watch how she works. Does she read, or does she trace?" Mikhael frowned. "How do I know the difference?" "Give her a mark she has never seen. One from the old script." Dagna's breath was shallow. "If she only copies, she will draw it wrong when it means something new. A reader thinks. A tracer guesses." Mikhael went to the blue block of forever-ice. He carved a fresh pair into it, two marks from the ancient form, joined at a shared stroke. He had never taught her these. He waved Nora over. "Read it." Nora studied the ice. The wolf lifted its head and watched her, calm and still. She traced the join with one finger. Then she stopped. "This one is old," she said. "Not like the simple marks. But it bends the same way." She pointed at the shared stroke. "This part is 'wind.' This part is 'warm.' Together..." She chewed her lip. "Warm wind. The kind that melts the ice." Dagna's chest tightened. That was right. Not just the shape. The meaning, and the bridge from the simple marks to the old. The girl had not been shown this. She had reasoned it. "Draw it again," Mikhael said. "On the hide. From memory." Nora took a charcoal pen. She drew the pair without looking at the ice. Then she changed one stroke. "No. That was wrong. The warm mark leans this way." She fixed it herself. She read it aloud once more. Mikhael turned to Dagna. "She reads," he said. "She catches her own mistakes. Like I did." Dagna let her head fall back on the furs. The fear loosened in her chest. Two hands had held the knowledge. Now three did, and all three could think, not just copy. A lost winter could not erase it. But her eyes drifted to the blue block, already sweating a thin skin of water in the cave's air. The marks lived in three minds now. They still lived nowhere solid. The ice would melt. The hides would fade. And her hands could no longer carve the stone. "Nora," she whispered. "Have you ever cut into rock?"
