Chapter 13

Nora came the next morning with a chunk of grey stone under her arm. She had scratched her own record into it overnight, proud of the work. Mikhael knelt beside the blue block and carved his version fresh, to match. Dagna watched from the furs. She wanted the two records set side by side. Two hands, one language. If they matched, the knowledge was safe in stone and ice both. But when the marks sat next to each other, they did not match. Mikhael frowned. He touched Nora's stone, then his own ice. "You wrote 'deep cold' here." "So did you," Nora said. "Not the same way." He pointed. His join curled left at the shared stroke. Hers bent right. "Mine is how Dagna taught me. Yours is different." Nora leaned close. Her jaw set. "You showed me the mark. I drew it back to you. You said it was right." "I taught what I knew." Mikhael's voice climbed. "You changed it." "I changed nothing." Dagna's chest went tight. This was the danger. Two records that disagreed were worse than one that faded. A later reader would find both and trust neither. The whole line would rot from doubt. "Stop," Dagna said. Her voice came out thin. Both of them turned. "Bring them here. Both." Nora carried the stone. Mikhael tipped the blue block so the light caught its cut faces. Dagna could not lift her arm to trace them. She looked with her eyes alone. Mikhael learned from the vault hides first. Nora learned the join from Mikhael's mouth and hand, later, in a hurry. Somewhere between them the stroke had flipped. Neither was lying. Neither was wrong on purpose. They had simply learned it from different sides. "Show me the old cave form," Dagna whispered. "On the hide. The true one." Mikhael dug through the layered stack of marked hides. He pulled the sheet copied from the cave wall. He set it flat and pointed to the ancient join for 'deep cold.' The stroke on the old form curled left. Like Mikhael's. Not like Nora's. Nora stared at it a long moment. She did not argue. She took a charcoal pen from beside the stack. On a bare corner of hide she drew her wrong version, then the true one under it. "I bent it the easy way," she said. "Toward my hand. Not toward the source." She looked up. "The cave decides. Not me." "The cave decides," Dagna repeated. Something loosened in her. Nora set her stone in her lap and began recutting the join, checking the hide after every stroke. Mikhael watched, then checked his ice against the same hide. Now both records answered to one master. The old cave form. Not to whoever held the tool. Dagna let her head fall back. The knowledge would live in two records that agreed. But her eyes went to the sweating blue block and the fading hides. Agreement meant nothing on ice and skin. It had to reach stone that Nora's young hands could finish before the thaw.
