Chapter 14

The two records agreed at last. Nora's stone matched the blue ice, both answering to the old cave form. But agreement on ice meant nothing. The blue block already wept water at its base. The marked hides curled and cracked in the shadowed rear, where the cold held only for a while longer. Dagna needed stone. Stone that would last past her death, past the thaw, past every hand that would ever hold a tool. And her own hands could no longer hold a chisel. Dagna lifted her fingers off the furs. They shook. She pressed them flat again. "I cannot carve it," she said. "You know this." Mikhael knelt by the blue block. He had walked to her hollow uninvited, seasons ago, carrying furs to keep her sculptures from splitting. He had stayed to learn the marks. Now he cut them better than she ever had. "Then Nora carves," he said. "You said her hands are young." Nora looked up from her grey stone. Behind her round glasses her eyes were steady. She had learned the marks by reasoning, not tracing. But her hands had cut only soft practice stone. "I can carve," she said. "I need the true form beside me. Every stroke." "Then take it." Dagna nodded at the marked hides. "The cave sheet. Set it where you can see it. Copy nothing from memory. The hide decides." Mikhael pulled the cave sheet free and weighted its corners. Nora dragged a fresh block of grey stone across the floor. She set her chisel to it. She checked the hide. She cut. She checked again. She cut again. The arctic wolf lifted its head from the rear of the hollow, then settled. Outside, a black hawk cried once and was gone. Dagna heard none of it. She watched Nora's hands. The girl worked slow. She did not rush a single join. When her hand wanted to bend the stroke the easy way, she stopped, looked at the hide, and forced it left. Mikhael watched over her shoulder. Twice he opened his mouth. Twice he said nothing. She caught her own mistakes before he could. Hours passed. The light shifted. Nora's fingers bled at the knuckle. She wrapped them in fur and kept cutting. Mikhael brought the blue block close so she could compare deep cuts. She matched every one to the hide instead. At dusk she set down the chisel. The record stood finished in grey stone. Every mark true to the cave. Mikhael ran his thumb along the joins and found no fault. Dagna could not lift her arm to touch it. She looked with her eyes alone. The knowledge lived now in stone that would not melt. "It is done," Nora said. Dagna let her head fall back. One record stood in stone. But one stone could crack, could be lost, could be buried under snow no one remembered. One was not enough.
