Chapter 1

Danny believed a board game could save the world, and tonight he had eight hours to prove it before his nerve gave out. He stood in his cramped office at midnight, staring at a blank whiteboard easel he'd bought that afternoon. The idea burned in his head. It refused to become anything real. He was forty-eight, bald, and out of time to keep dreaming. The idea was simple to feel and impossible to explain. Players would fight a slow disaster together, not each other. They'd learn that no one wins alone. He wanted people to leave the table changed. But every time he reached for it, the concept slipped away like smoke. He uncapped a marker and wrote one word. "Cooperation." He stared at it. Then he wiped it off. Too vague. He tried again. "Survival." Wiped it off. An hour passed. The board stayed as clean as when he bought it. His cat jumped onto the desk. The plump black tomcat wore a small pumpkin costume Danny hadn't managed to remove since October. A white smear of fur curled under his nose like a mustache. The cat knocked a worn paperback off the desk. Danny picked it up. The cover showed a bearded man fighting monsters in a ruined dungeon. He'd read it four times. He almost set it back. Then he stopped. The book worked because it had rules. A dying world. A countdown. Real stakes printed in plain numbers. The story didn't lecture. It made you play. Danny sat down slowly. That was his whole problem. He'd been trying to write a message. He needed to build a machine. He stood and attacked the whiteboard. He drew a circle and labeled it "The Board: a dying world." He drew a track around it. "Ten turns before collapse." He sketched player cards. Each player got one resource the others needed. Nobody could survive holding their own cards. He drew arrows between them, trading, begging, sacrificing. The cat watched from the desk, tail flicking. Danny didn't stop. He filled the board with boxes and lines. A win condition. A loss condition. A rule that punished hoarding. By the time the sky turned gray, the easel held a full game. He stepped back and read it top to bottom. It held together. Every piece connected to the next. For the first time, the thing in his head existed outside it. He could hand this to a stranger and they could play. Danny laughed, tired and shaking. The idea was real now. He could finally build it. Then his eyes caught the trading rule again, and his stomach dropped. On paper, one player could take everything and still win. His whole point was that greed should lose. The design proved the opposite. He'd solved the blank page and built a game that betrayed its own meaning. Now he had to break it and start the rules over.
