Chapter 2

The whiteboard still showed the broken rule. Danny had circled the trading line three times. He kept rewriting it in his head. Trade two, gain one. Trade three, gain two. Every version looked fine on the board. But he couldn't tell if it forced players to help each other. He needed to see hands reach across a table. He needed to watch someone try to cheat and fail. He grabbed a stack of index cards. He wrote resources on each one. Water. Grain. Medicine. Power. He needed players. It was two in the morning. His wife was asleep. So he built a fake table. He set four chairs around the kitchen. On one chair he propped a printed picture of a snarling beast, all lightning and smoke and cracked earth. That was the disaster the players fought. He dealt cards to the three empty seats and played all of them himself. He moved chair to chair, arguing with himself out loud. He tried the greedy path first. He took the greedy seat and hoarded every card. Under his new rule, hoarding froze his own resources. He couldn't spend what he wouldn't share. By turn six, the greedy player starved. Danny grinned. The fix worked. Then he found the hole. In the medicine seat, he refused to trade too. Both hoarders lost. But the third player, sitting quiet, scooped up the leftover cards and won alone. The new rule punished greed. It still let one patient player survive without anyone. His whole point collapsed again. "You're playing all four of them." Jessyca stood in the doorway. Her reddish hair was flat on one side. Her glasses sat crooked. She looked at the beast on the chair, then at her husband crawling between seats. "I can't test it alone," Danny said. "I keep missing my own tricks." She pulled out a chair and sat. "Then deal me in. Give me the seat you think can cheat." He dealt her the quiet seat. She played it cold. She waited. She let the others fight. On turn eight she reached to grab the leftover cards, the same move Danny had made. "Stop," Danny said. He saw it now. He wrote a new line on a card. "Leftover cards rot at turn's end. Nobody banks them." Jessyca tried again. Without the pile to grab, she had to trade to live. She traded. She survived. So did the others. No one won alone. Danny sat back on the floor. The rule held. He had watched it hold with a real second player, not just his own head. "It works," he said. "Cooperation is the only path now." Jessyca yawned. "Good. Now the game's fair." She stood and touched his shoulder. "But it's boring. I knew what to do every turn. There's no choice." Danny stared at the cards. She was right. He had forced cooperation. He had also killed every hard decision. A fair game no one wanted to play would save no one.
