Chapter 10

Darkness carries the journal back to the workshop table and sets it down under the lamp. The pages fan open, showing columns of addresses and dates written in the same tight handwriting she saw in the ledgers. She doesn't sit. She stands over it, hands flat on either side, and reads. The journal gives her everything. Seventeen safe houses. Eight relay points. Backup routes through the subway tunnels. The collector schedule at the asylum. Names of people the hunter tracked for years before they vanished from the entries entirely. And buried in the back pages, she finds what she needs most — a diagram of a theater with red curtains, labeled with times and positions. The hunter's final play. The place where they plan to force her hand. Darkness copies the address onto her palm with a pen from the table. She knows what this is. The hunter left this journal where she would find it because they want her to come. They're counting on her walking into a building they've already staged. Nyx stands beside the table now, reading over her shoulder. She asks if Darkness is going. Darkness closes the journal and looks at the address on her hand. She says yes. Not tonight, but soon. Before the hunter moves again. The trap is only dangerous if she doesn't see it coming — and now she knows exactly where it is and what it's meant to do. She can walk into the theater with her eyes open and turn the hunter's own staging against them. But she has to go alone. If Nyx comes, the hunter gets what they want. If Darkness goes without her, she controls when and how the trap springs. She tells Nyx to pack what she needs and stay at the workshop until it's done. Nyx doesn't argue. She picks up the journal and tucks it into an old canvas trunk sitting against the wall, then closes the brass latches. The trunk holds everything now — the journal, the metal map from the collector, the ledger from the cemetery. All the pieces of the hunter's network in one place. Darkness walks to the workshop entrance and climbs the ladder to street level. Outside, a cracked streetlight stands near the library steps, throwing broken shadows across the pavement. She stops beneath it and looks at the address still visible on her palm. The choice is made. She's walking into the hunter's trap, but she's doing it on her terms. And when she gets there, the hunter will learn what it costs to build a cage for someone who's been watching them build it.
