Chapter 9

They return to the library through the collapsed entrance, dropping down through the hole in the floor where Darkness first showed Nyx the workshop beneath. The space feels different now — less like a secret and more like shelter. Darkness sets her jacket on the old wooden crate in the corner. She turns toward the far wall where old shelving units line the brick, then stops. There's a door behind the shelves she never noticed before — rusted hinges visible through the gap, blue paint peeling away from metal. She pulls the shelving aside. The door doesn't budge when she tries the handle. Nyx crosses the room and studies the frame. She says it's sealed from the inside, not locked. Darkness runs her fingers along the edge and feels the weld points — someone closed this in a hurry and never came back. She wedges a pry bar into the gap and pulls. The hinges scream. The door breaks open and swings inward, releasing the smell of stale air and rust. Inside is a small room with a single table covered in tools and tangled wire. An incomplete device sits in the center, half-assembled, wires spilling across the surface. The hunter built this space and left before finishing whatever they started. Darkness steps inside and sees a leather journal lying open beside the device. The pages are filled with addresses — safe houses, relay points, backup locations across the city. Names she doesn't recognize beside each entry. Dates that go back years. This wasn't just a network for hunting Nyx. This was infrastructure for tracking dozens of people across long stretches of time. She picks up the journal and flips through it, seeing patterns she recognizes from her own workshop — the same obsessive documentation, the same need to know where everyone was at all times. The hunter didn't just watch people. They built a system to make sure no one could disappear. Nyx stands in the doorway and asks if the journal shows where the hunter went. Darkness scans the last entries and finds three addresses circled in red ink, dated two days ago. The hunter planned to run to one of these places when everything collapsed. But which one, Darkness can't know without going to each location — and that means splitting their focus, leaving Nyx exposed while she searches. She closes the journal and meets Nyx's eyes. She says they're not chasing the hunter to ground tonight. They're taking this journal, mapping every location, and turning the hunter's own system against them. For the first time, Darkness has the hunter's playbook. And she's going to make sure the hunter knows she found it.
