They walk without speaking, leaving the cemetery behind. Darkness watches the street ahead while Nyx keeps her hands in her jacket pockets. The hunter's network is crippled now — the informant's phone destroyed, the relay tower exposed, the schedule interrupted. But crippled doesn't mean dead. Darkness finds the entrance to the subway tunnel six blocks south. The metal grate is propped open with a crowbar someone left behind. She knows this tunnel connects to the communications hub on the eastern edge of the city — the last relay point in the hunter's network. If the hunter is running, they'll use this route to reach the hub and purge whatever records remain. Nyx follows her down the concrete steps without asking why. The tunnel stretches ahead, flickering lights casting shadows across the curved walls. Darkness moves fast, her steps soundless on the metal rails. The communications hub rises out of the ground like a ruin. Shattered equipment hangs from the walls. Dark windows stare down at the empty lot surrounding it. Darkness circles the building twice, checking for movement, for signs the hunter is still inside. She finds nothing. Then she sees the rifle half-buried in wet concrete near the loading dock — leather sling twisted, barrel scratched, abandoned in a hurry. The concrete is still soft. Darkness crouches and touches it. Hours old, maybe less. The hunter was here and left everything behind. Nyx stands beside her, looking at the rifle, then at the silent building. She says the hunter won't come back for this. Darkness knows she's right. The network is gone. The hunter chose survival over salvage. But Darkness also knows what the rifle means — the hunter is running now, not hunting. That window where Darkness could have cornered them, forced a confrontation, ended this cleanly — it closed the moment the hunter stepped away from this place. Nyx pulls her jacket tighter and says they should go home. Darkness stands, leaves the rifle where it is, and follows. The hunt isn't over. But for the first time, the hunter is the one looking over their shoulder.
