Chapter 7

They leave the library together, moving through the collapsed entrance where the mossy arch frames the night beyond. Darkness keeps pace beside Nyx, close enough to intervene if something moves in the shadows ahead. The street is empty, but that doesn't mean anything anymore. Nyx stops at a wooden bench outside a sealed stone chamber at the edge of the cemetery. The initials carved into the slats are faded but still visible. She sits down without asking if they should rest. Darkness stands for a moment, then sits beside her, leaving space between them that Nyx immediately closes by shifting closer. The album is tucked inside Nyx's jacket — the one Darkness kept hidden in the workshop beneath the library, the one she never meant anyone to find. Nyx pulls it out and opens it across both their laps. The photographs inside are water-damaged and curling at the edges. Buildings Darkness mapped before she knew what hunting meant. Faces she watched until she understood their patterns. Nyx turns the pages slowly, stopping on one where a woman stands outside the portrait gallery, her back to the camera. Nyx's finger hovers over the image. She asks the question Darkness has deflected a hundred times before: who taught you to see people this way? Darkness feels the steel door of the chamber behind them, solid and unyielding, trapping her against the answer. She could lie. She could deflect again. But Nyx is holding the album like it already told her everything, and the weight of that stops Darkness cold. Darkness says the woman's name — the one who taught her that watching was safer than trusting, that knowing someone's truth before they could use it against you was the only way to survive. Nyx doesn't pull away. She closes the album and sets it between them on the bench. She says she already knew Darkness was protecting her the only way she learned how, and that she's not afraid of where it came from. Darkness feels something crack open in her chest, something she's kept sealed for years. Nyx stands and offers her hand. Darkness takes it, and they leave the album on the bench behind them, the initials carved into the wood marking what was finally let go.
