Nyx is moving through the city now, somewhere ahead of Darkness, following whatever path the hunter laid out for her. The hunter knows where Nyx will go before she does. They've been planning this for days, maybe longer. Darkness is always one step behind, finding the traps after they're set. But Darkness knows something the hunter doesn't — she knows how Nyx thinks. The church with the stone steeple stands three blocks from the library, which means if Nyx follows the alibi route, she'll cut through the square beside it. Darkness reaches the square first and finds the bollards chained across the northern path, blocking the direct route. Fresh scratches mark the base where they were dragged into position tonight. The hunter is steering Nyx toward the church, forcing her path. Darkness circles the church and finds the cigarette butt on the stone steps, ash still warm, smoke curling up into the night air. Minutes ago. Maybe less. The hunter was here, watching, waiting to see if Nyx would arrive. Then they left — not because they gave up, but because they're moving to the next position. Darkness looks up at the steeple and understands. The hunter isn't trying to catch Nyx tonight. They're walking her through the city like a rehearsal, timing her movements, learning her patterns. The real trap hasn't been set yet. Darkness stops chasing. She turns away from the church, away from the path the hunter prepared, and heads toward where Nyx actually is — not where she's supposed to be. The hunter is one step ahead of Darkness, but they're following a script. Nyx never sticks to scripts. If Darkness can find her before she reaches the church, before she walks the route they expect, she can pull her off the path entirely. The hunter will be waiting in an empty room, and Darkness will know exactly where they are.
