Chapter 4

Darkness moves fast now, cutting across the city toward where Nyx should be. The hunter expects her to follow the path they prepared, but Darkness is done chasing shadows. She's going straight to Nyx. But something catches her eye in the narrow cemetery between buildings — a leather-bound ledger wedged behind a weathered gravestone. The initials W.G. are carved deep into the granite, darkened by years of city soot. Darkness pulls the ledger free. Inside, names are listed with dates and times. Nyx Hollow, tonight's date, 11:47 PM. Below it, written in the same efficient hand: W.G., same date, 12:15 AM. Darkness goes still. The hunter isn't just tracking Nyx. They're tracking someone else tonight too, someone whose grave marker sits right here where the ledger was hidden. This coordination system isn't for one target. It's for multiple people, timed in sequence. Darkness tears the pages listing both names from the ledger and leaves the rest behind. Tucked between the pages, she finds a cracked GPS tracker, its red light still blinking despite the corroded battery contacts. It's set to Nyx's usual routes, confirming what Darkness already suspected — this was never about chance. The hunter will know she found the ledger, will know their system is compromised. But Darkness doesn't care about staying hidden anymore. She tucks the torn pages into the shadows she carries with her and turns back toward Nyx's path. Protecting Nyx isn't just about tonight. It's about burning down the entire network that thinks it can hunt the people she loves. And she just lit the first match. She climbs the rusted radio tower at the cemetery's edge, vines tearing under her weight as she reaches the platform. Frequency charts scatter in the wind, but one stays pinned beneath a rock — a routing schedule matching the ledger's timeline. The tower served as a relay point, a place where collectors could coordinate without crossing paths. Darkness crushes the tracker under her heel and drops the broken pieces into the dark below. Then she takes the routing schedule and the torn ledger pages and leaves them spread across the platform where the next collector will find them. A message: she knows their system now. She knows who comes next. And when they arrive at 12:15 to check this station, they'll find their network exposed and their target already warned. The hunter wanted to stay ahead of her, but Darkness just forced them to choose — abandon the second target, or walk into a trap of her own making.
