Chapter 114

The day after Eduardo asked the town for help, the first knock came before noon. He opened the door to a yoga teacher he knew by sight, a woman who taught the town's children and smiled with her whole face. Maya Sunshine held a basket of bread and a folded quilt. "I came for the baby," she said, like it was the simplest thing in the world. She stepped past him and went straight to the cradle. Mellani stopped fussing the moment Maya leaned over her. After that they came every day. The Wise One arrived one gray morning and pressed her hand flat against Kiersten's bedroom wall before she said a word. "The weight is sitting in her hips," she told Eduardo. "She's been holding her body still too long. Walk her to the window and back. Twice a day." He did it. Kiersten leaned on his arm, took six steps, and rested. The next day she took ten. Mother Angel came on Sundays. She prayed over Kiersten with her hands on the blanket, then washed the dishes stacked by the basin without being asked. She left broth on the stove. "You asked plainly," she told Eduardo once, drying her hands. "That is why the door keeps opening." Men split wood in the yard. Women folded laundry at the kitchen table. Someone paid the feed bill before Eduardo could. He kept trying to take the work from their hands, and each time he caught himself and stepped back. He let them help. That was the hardest part, and he did it anyway. One morning Kiersten climbed the stairs alone. Eduardo heard her feet on each step and froze at the bottom, hands ready to catch her. She reached the top and turned around. "Don't," she said. "I want to do it myself." Her face was no longer gray. He stood there and let her. That afternoon she carried Mellani to the window by herself and held her there a long time. Her arms did not shake. "I'm mending," she said. It was not a question. She looked at the yard full of neighbors stacking wood. "You didn't carry this one." "No," Eduardo said. "I asked. They came." Mellani watched them both from Kiersten's arms. Her small mouth moved. "Good," she said, flat, like she was marking something down. Eduardo did not argue with it this time either. That night the house was quiet. Kiersten slept without waking for the first time in weeks. Eduardo sat by the hearth and understood the thing had changed. He had spent his whole life proving he needed no one, and it had cost him his word, his business, and once, this woman. Now his wife was healing because he had opened the door and let the town walk through it. The house felt full. He did not know yet what he would build next inside a home that finally held more than his own pride.
