Chapter 42

Eduardo woke to a knock before sunrise. Two men stood on his porch, hats in hand. One was a market vendor. The other drank with his cousin. They asked him plain: was the retraction true, or was he running his cousin down for spite? Eduardo told them again. His cousin had lied. He had let it stand. The vendor nodded and left. The other man stared a long moment, then walked off without a word. Eduardo shut the door and knew the town was still deciding. By noon he heard it at the feed store. Two versions of him now walked the same streets. One was the man who had finally told the truth. The other was a jealous cousin trying to bury a rival with an old story. The old man signed his ledger and said nothing. Eduardo wiped his hands on his jeans and went to the one place he still ate on Fridays. The feast hall smelled of onions and bread. Vines wrapped the stone outside, and light came through the tall windows in slats. Gwen stood at the long table pouring stew for a farmer and his boy. She did not smile at Eduardo. She pointed her ladle at a stool. "Sit," she said. "Eat." He sat. She set a bowl in front of him and a cup beside it. The farmer left. The room went quiet except for the fire. "They're saying two things about me," Eduardo said. "I heard." "Which do you believe." Gwen wiped her hands on her apron. "I feed you Fridays. I've watched your hands a month. Liars don't scrub pots for three dollars. They find easier work." She picked up his empty cup and filled it. "I'll say so if asked. I won't argue with fools." He ate. The door opened and a card-shaped animal walked in on four legs, tail dragging. Fortune came to the stool beside him and sat like a person. The wheel on its face turned once. "You didn't come to me," Fortune said. "So I came to you." "I don't have a question." "You have one. You want to know if it worked." Eduardo set down his spoon. "Did it." "Half the town believes you. Half believes your cousin. That is the answer for today. It will not be the answer in a year." Fortune's tail thumped once against the stool. "A retraction is not a verdict. Your work is the verdict. Keep scrubbing pots. Keep signing the book. The doubters will watch you longer than the believers. Let them." "And my cousin." "He will speak against you where he can. He has less every week. You have more." Fortune stood and walked out. Gwen took the bowl away. Eduardo walked home in the late sun. The lie was not dead. His name was not clean. But it was moving the right direction, and the work was still his to do. He picked up the pry bar and went back to the porch.
