Chapter 50

The morning after the meal, Eduardo sat alone in his front room. The two chairs still faced each other. He looked at the second cup on the table and felt the quiet settle in. Last night the house had held voices. Now it held only him. He thought about how he had finally let people inside these walls. Then a harder thought came. He had shared this warmth with an old man and a boy. He had never once shared it with Kiersten. She had lived beside him for years, and he had never made a single room feel like home. He remembered the texts he sent after she left. He had accused her of being with her cousin. He wrote it again and again. She never once admitted it, because it was never true. He remembered why. He had found a ponytail holder that wasn't hers and turned it into a weapon against her. When his own guilt rose, he handed it to her instead. He made her carry it. Eduardo stood and walked to the window. The glass was clean now. Once it had been broken, boards nailed across the frame. He had lived in a broken house and called her the broken thing. He thought of the last time he reached out. He had asked her to talk as friends. She had answered in her plain, short way. "You would only hurt me." Six words. No anger in them. Just a fact she already knew, the way she always knew endings before he did. He had told himself, in that moment, that he wanted friendship. Now he made himself look straight at the truth. He had not wanted her friendship. He had wanted a door left open. He had wanted her near enough to reach when he felt small. That was not love. That was another hand held out to take. Eduardo sat back down at the table. He pulled the new ledger toward him, the one for kindnesses. He did not write a kindness. He wrote what he had done to her, plainly, in his own hand. He named the accusations. He named the ponytail holder. He named the friendship he had asked for and why. When he finished, he did not tear the page out. He set the pen down. The old habit would have burned it, hidden it, cleared the ledger and started clean. He left it open on the table. He understood something now that the empty second chair had shown him. He could learn to make a home. But he could never make one for her. That time was gone, and she had been right to go. The home he was building would be his to fill with others. Eduardo carried the second cup to the shelf. He set it there the way Gwen kept a cup for her husband. Not to wait for Kiersten. To remember what he owed her honesty, and to stop pretending he could pay it back.
