Chapter 80

Sunday came again, then the one after. Eduardo and Kiersten kept walking to the stone church together. But now something else followed them home. Small things lined up. He would think of her mother, and Kiersten would say the woman's name in the same breath. A hawk crossed the road twice on the same walk. Eduardo did not know what to make of it. He asked Kiersten to come to the church early, before Father's service, so they could sit and try to understand. They knelt in the colored light. Kiersten spoke first, plain as always. "We keep landing in the same place. You hurt me. I explained myself. I hoped that if I said it right, you'd finally hear. You never did. So I said it again." She looked at the stars on the floor. "That was our cycle. I kept walking back into it." Eduardo felt the old shame rise. He did not run from it. "I know the loop. I made you carry my pain and call it yours. Every time you took me back, I made you smaller." His voice caught. "I don't want that loop. I don't know how to leave it." Father came in from the side door. He wore his white robes, the golden pendant carved with web lines against his chest. He did not ask what troubled them. "You feel the pattern," he said. "Both of you. You circle the same wound." He sat near them. "A loop breaks when one person steps off. Not with words. With a new thing done, again and again." Kiersten turned to Eduardo. "That's what scares me. I feel endings. I always have. I don't feel one now. I feel something I never felt with you. A new track." Dreamer stood in the doorway. She had come for the service. She was the town's dream reader, quiet, and she saw who a story left out. She spoke without stepping closer. "The old loop kept one of you out. You spoke and he shut the door. Now you're both inside the same room." She looked at Kiersten. "That's the new dream. You don't carry it alone." Eduardo took Kiersten's hand, the way she had taken his on the steps. "I hear you now. Not to end it. To share it." Father nodded once. "Then name the new cycle. Say what you do together." "We come here," Kiersten said. "We pray. We tell the truth on Fridays. We build a home two people made." "Every week," Eduardo added. "Not to fix. To return." Something settled in the room. The old cycle, the one where she begged and he refused, closed like a spent thing. A new one opened in its place, shared between them. They stood together and walked out into the morning. The synchronicities no longer felt like a warning. They felt like proof they were finally walking the same road.
