Chapter 88

The next morning, Eduardo walked through the house and saw the truth. Her mother's photo hung on the wall. Her box sat in the corner. But every room was still shaped by him. Kiersten had filled her locket with what they would build. He had given her no place to build it. The house held them both, yet none of it was truly hers. At breakfast he set down his cup. "There's a corner of the yard doing nothing," he said. "I want to build you a room out there. Yours alone. Not ours. I won't decide what goes in it." Kiersten studied him. "You've never given me a space you didn't control." "I know," Eduardo said. "That's why I won't touch the inside. You fill it." She was quiet a moment. Then she said, "Build the walls. I'll tell you where the door goes." He worked for three days. He asked her where each wall should stand. He let her mark the window with chalk. When his old urge rose to make it grand, he split the board plainly and nailed it true. The small building took shape beside the weary house, its fresh wood bright against the sagging roof. On the fourth day Kiersten walked inside and stood in the empty room. Light came through the window she had placed. "I know what this is," she said. "A cave greenhouse. A place to sit and breathe. Where I paint and nothing's at stake." "Then make it that," Eduardo said. She brought in plants over the following week. She hung soft cloth. She set a cushion on the stone floor and left a brush and a bowl by the wall. She carried in a low pot and filled it with soil. Eduardo did not arrange a single thing. He only carried what she pointed to and set it where she said. When she finished, she stood in the doorway and looked back at him. "This one's mine," she said. "You built it. But you didn't fill it. That's new." "It was always meant to be yours," Eduardo said. Kiersten opened her locket. She tore a small green leaf from one of her new plants and pressed it flat inside. "First thing I grew here," she said. She closed the locket against her throat. Eduardo looked at the bright room beside his battered house. For the first time, the home held a place that was hers and not his. The vow in her locket had a room to grow in now. Kiersten stepped back out to the porch. She set two cups on the rail, one from his shelf, one from her new room. "Tomorrow I'll bring you in," she said. "As a guest. You'll knock." Eduardo nodded. He had built her a door he could not walk through unasked. That was the point.
