Chapter 96

The empty house held the quiet of a church. Eduardo stood in the front room with Kiersten, their footsteps loud on bare floor. They had built the walls. Now they faced the problem she had named on the road: neither of them knew how to live inside them. Eduardo caught his old urge rising. He wanted to buy a table, pick a spot, make it done. He held still instead. "I could bring in chairs today," he said. "Have it filled by dark." Kiersten looked at him the way she read his ledgers. "That's you taking over again." He knew she was right. The old Eduardo filled rooms the way he filled silences, fast and alone. "Then tell me what to do." "I don't know either," she said. "My mother made a home with almost nothing. I never learned how. I just felt it." They stood there, two people who had never been shown how to build daily life. Eduardo thought of the picnic, the planting on the old porch. Each had worked because they did one small thing together, not one large thing he controlled. "What if we don't fill it all at once," he said. "What if we pick one thing. Together. And we do it every day until it's ours." Kiersten's eyes narrowed, testing the idea. "One thing." "You choose it," Eduardo said. He meant it. He did not steer. She walked to the wide window and looked at the bare floor beneath it. "Morning light comes here," she said. "We put one table here. We eat here every morning. Not big. Just ours." Eduardo almost said he would build it that afternoon. He caught the words. "We build it," he said. "Both hands." They went out to the scrap lumber the town had left behind. Eduardo picked up a board. He started to measure. Then he stopped and handed Kiersten the pencil. "Where do you want the cut?" She marked it. He sawed to her line. They worked until dusk, slow, arguing twice about the leg height, agreeing both times. When the table stood, it was small and plain and crooked at one corner. Eduardo looked at the crooked corner. He did not fix it alone. Kiersten set two cups on the table. She poured from her own kettle, the one she had carried in weeks ago. She filled his cup, then hers. "Tomorrow we do it again," she said. "Same table. Same light. That's how a home gets made. One morning at a time." Eduardo sat. For the first time, he was not building the house for her or proving anything to her. He was building a life beside her, one he did not control and did not want to. The fear of taking over had not won. They had their ritual. The rooms were still empty. But the mornings now had a place to begin.
