Chapter 1

The forest was dying, and Elara Moonwhisper did not know where to find the one tree that could save it. For three nights the oaks had dropped their leaves out of season. The streams ran low. The birds had gone silent. Elara had lived in Silverleaf Forest for six hundred years, and she had never seen the land sicken like this. She knew the cause. The heart-tree slept, and its roots bound every living thing in the forest. If she could wake it, the forest would heal. But no elf alive remembered where the heart-tree lay hidden. She pressed her palm to a bare maple and asked it to remember. The tree gave her nothing. The old knowledge was buried too deep. So Elara climbed down into the hollow beneath her roots, where she kept what others had forgotten. The tall carved bookcases stood against the earthen walls. They held the spell books and journals she had gathered across the centuries. Candles leaned between the spines. A glass orb glowed faint on one shelf. Elara pulled down volume after volume. She read until her eyes burned. Floods, fires, blights, treaties with the wolves. Nothing told her where the heart-tree slept. Then her fingers found a book she did not know. Its cover was plain wood, cracked with age. She had carried it here once and never opened it. Inside, the ink had faded to gray. The hand was her own, from so long ago that she had forgotten writing it. The first pages described the planting of the heart-tree. The last page held a map. Elara leaned toward the candle. The map showed a ring of white stones and a spring that ran uphill. She knew that place. It lay a day's walk north, under the deep moss where no one ever went. The heart-tree slept beneath those stones. Her hands shook as she closed the book. She had the location at last. But the final line of her old writing stopped her cold. The waking would not come free. To rouse the heart-tree, the writer warned, one must feed it living magic. The druid who wakes it must give the tree her own. Elara sat still in the candlelight. She had spent six centuries keeping this forest alive. Now she knew where to go and what the journey would cost her. She packed the book, took her staff, and climbed back into the dying night. The white stones waited to the north.
