Chapter 2

Elara walked north at first light, her old book open in one hand. The map showed a bend in the river, then a stand of three oaks, then the climb to the white stones. But the river had moved. The three oaks were gone, fallen to rot years ago. She stood in a clearing that matched nothing on the page. Centuries had shifted the land. Her own map had lied to her. She tried the eastern slope first. By midday she reached a dead creek bed where the book promised a meadow. Wrong. She backtracked and tried the ridge. Wrong again. Each false path cost her hours. The forest around her was browning fast. If she wandered for days, the heart-tree might sleep past waking. Her hands shook as she turned the page once more. "You're lost." The voice came from behind a thorn shrub. A young man stepped out, bow across his back, a silver wolf's head hanging at his throat. His eyes caught the light and flashed gold, then faded. Elara had healed hunters and wanderers for six hundred years. This one she did not know, but she knew what he was. Wolf-blooded. The animals trusted such men when they trusted no one else. "The paths have changed," she said. "My map is too old." "Maps always are." Kael crouched and touched the dirt. "I've tracked something through here three nights. Its eyes go gold, like mine. Not animal. Not fully." He stood. "Where are you going?" "North. White stones. An uphill spring." He said nothing for a moment. Then he nodded toward a wall of silver-barked trees ahead, hung with glowing flowers and dark thorns. "The water tells you. Not the ground." He pushed into the grove. Elara followed. Inside, vines twisted through old roots. A small green dragon no bigger than a cat clung to a branch, wings thin as glass, golden eyes watching them. It breathed a thin curl of smoke. Kael knelt by a trickle of water between the stones. He pressed two fingers to the current, then tasted it. "This runs uphill," he said. "Springs don't. Unless they feed something higher." He pointed past the grove, up a slope Elara's map never showed. "Follow the wrong-running water. It climbs to your stones." Elara stared. For a day she had trusted dead landmarks. The living water had been the true map all along. "I would have wandered until the forest died," she said. "Then don't." Kael shouldered his bow. The small dragon lifted off the branch and settled on his shoulder. "I'll walk you to the stones. Then I follow my own trail." His eyes flicked gold again. "Whatever I'm tracking went the same way you're going." Elara closed the useless book and left it in the moss. She would not need it now. She had a guide, a direction, and a warning. Something waited at the white stones ahead of her.
