Chapter 4

Chapter 4 — The Whisper Beneath the Roots Elara stood frozen beneath the ancient trees. Lord Vaelthorn’s words hung in the cold night air. “Lead me to the Heart-Tree.” His voice was quiet, but there was something beneath it that made Elara’s skin crawl. He wasn’t asking. He wasn’t even warning her. He was certain she would obey. Kael slowly stepped in front of her, his hand resting against the knife at his hip. “You’ll have to go through me first.” Vaelthorn’s black eyes shifted toward him. For several seconds, no one moved. Then Vaelthorn smiled. “You still protect others, Kael. Even after what the forest did to you.” Kael’s expression hardened. “You know nothing about me.” “Oh, I know more than you think.” A sudden wind tore through the trees. The branches twisted overhead, and the leaves began to shake violently. Elara felt something strange beneath her feet. A faint warmth. She looked down. Thin green lines of light were spreading through the roots beneath the soil. Vaelthorn noticed them too. His smile disappeared. “The tree is calling you,” he whispered. Elara looked at him. “How do you know?” Vaelthorn took one step forward. “Because it called me once.” The ground suddenly trembled. A deep sound rolled through the forest—not quite a roar and not quite a voice. It seemed to come from beneath the earth itself. Kael grabbed Elara’s arm. “We need to go. Now.” They turned and ran. Branches whipped against Elara’s face as they raced deeper into the forest. Behind them came the sound of Vaelthorn’s footsteps, slow and deliberate. He wasn’t chasing them. He didn’t need to. Elara could feel him watching. They ran until the sound of the footsteps disappeared. Kael finally pulled her behind the enormous roots of an ancient oak. “Don’t move,” he whispered. Elara struggled to catch her breath. “Is he gone?” Kael listened. Nothing. Then a voice whispered beside Elara’s ear. “Not yet.” She spun around. No one was there. Her heart pounded. “What was that?” Kael stared at her. “What did you hear?” “A voice.” His face changed. “What did it say?” Elara hesitated. “Not yet.” Kael looked toward the forest. For the first time since they had met, Elara saw fear in his eyes. “We’re closer than I thought.” “To the tree?” Kael nodded. “No. To something else.” Before Elara could ask what he meant, the ground beneath them split. A massive root pushed through the soil, glowing with the same green light she had seen earlier. The root curled around a stone buried beneath the earth. Symbols appeared across its surface. Elara recognized them immediately. They were the same symbols she had seen in the ancient books. She reached toward the stone. Kael grabbed her wrist. “Wait.” “Why?” “Because if that’s what I think it is…” The stone began to glow. A whisper rose from beneath the earth. This time, both of them heard it. “Elara…” She slowly pulled her hand free. The forest became completely silent. Then, somewhere far behind them, a single black flame appeared between the trees. Vaelthorn had found them again. Kael drew his knife. “Run.” Elara looked at the glowing stone one last time. Then she understood. The stone wasn’t showing them the way to the Heart-Tree. It was showing them what was waiting for them when they arrived.
