Chapter 5

Chapter 5 — The Heart of the Forest Elara ran until her lungs burned. Kael stayed close behind her, pushing branches aside as they moved deeper into the forest. The black flame they had seen between the trees was gone, but neither of them slowed. They followed the strange green glow beneath the earth. It appeared in flashes beneath their feet, traveling through roots and stones like veins carrying blood. Then the forest changed. The trees became larger. Older. Their trunks twisted together overhead, forming a natural archway that blocked out the moonlight. No birds sang here. No insects moved through the grass. Even the wind seemed afraid to enter. Kael stopped. Elara nearly walked into him. “What is it?” He stared ahead. “We’re here.” Elara looked through the trees. At first, she saw nothing. Then she stepped forward. Her breath caught. The forest opened into a massive clearing. And there it stood. The Heart-Tree. It was larger than anything she had imagined. Its silver-gray trunk rose into the darkness, disappearing among clouds of mist. Glowing green veins traveled through its bark, pulsing slowly like blood beneath skin. Its roots covered the clearing, some rising higher than Elara herself before disappearing beneath the earth. And at the center of the trunk was the Heart. A brilliant crystal shaped like a beating heart. It pulsed once. The entire forest illuminated. Elara felt the warmth before she heard the sound. A heartbeat. Boom. The ground beneath her feet trembled. Boom. The leaves above them began to glow. Boom. Elara felt tears forming in her eyes. She didn’t understand why. She only knew she had seen this place before. Not in a dream. Not in a book. Somewhere deep inside her memory. “Elara,” Kael whispered. She didn’t answer. She walked toward the tree. The closer she came, the stronger the warmth became. The Heart pulsed faster. Then something unexpected happened. A single root lifted from the ground. It moved slowly toward her. Kael immediately drew his knife. “Elara, don’t—” “It’s okay.” The root stopped inches from her hand. She reached out. The moment her fingers touched it, the world disappeared. Elara found herself standing in a field beneath a crimson sky. The Heart-Tree stood before her, but it was different. Young. Small. Surrounded by hundreds of elves. They were singing. Then the sky turned black. The vision changed. Fire consumed the forest. Elves screamed as shadowy creatures poured between the trees. And standing among them was Vaelthorn. He was younger then. His hands were covered in blood. Elara watched as he approached the young Heart-Tree. He placed his palm against its trunk. The tree screamed. Elara ripped her hand away. She fell backward onto the roots. Kael caught her. “What did you see?” Before she could answer, a deep voice echoed across the clearing. “You finally found it.” Kael turned. Elara slowly looked behind them. Lord Vaelthorn stood at the edge of the clearing. His black cloak moved in the wind, and the silver symbols across it glowed faintly. But he wasn’t looking at Kael. He was staring at the Heart-Tree. For the first time, Elara saw something she hadn’t expected on his face. Fear. Vaelthorn took a slow step forward. The Heart-Tree pulsed. Boom. Vaelthorn stopped. The light from the tree suddenly turned bright green. Then the Heart spoke. Not through words. Through a voice that seemed to come from every root, every leaf, and every living thing surrounding them. “You were never meant to return.” Vaelthorn’s expression hardened. “Elara,” he said quietly, “you have no idea what you have awakened.” The Heart pulsed again. And beneath their feet, something enormous moved beneath the earth.
