Chapter 29

The wagon rolled off with the Mandarin bound in the back. Stark's engines faded east. Thorn climbed up beside him, hammer across his knees. Ellen stood in the doorway and watched the pale man in the black coat. Dracula had not left the road. He stood past the reach of the lamp, still as a fence post. She did not know why he stayed. She did not know if he meant her women harm. She stepped onto the road. Cade came behind her with the shotgun. "Your business is done here," Ellen said. "Cade isn't the man you wanted. You got your kill." Dracula tilted his head. "I know. My grievance is answered." His voice was flat and old. "I linger because something worse is coming, and I would rather it not find me at your door." Before Ellen could ask, the air changed. The dust on the road stopped moving. The lamp flame froze without dying. A figure walked out of the dark on the salt beds. Small, robed, blue hair long down its back. Its eyes shone white. It did not hurry. "Nyx," Dracula said. He backed a step. "That is a Worldender. It ends things." Ellen had never seen the god, but she had felt its hate before. Twice her women had woken from dreams of a snapping hand and a sky gone dark. She knew the name the way you know a wound. Nyx stopped in the middle of the road. "You gather the cast-out," it said. Its voice was a child's and not a child's. "You build a nest for them. I do not like nests. They breed hope." "They're mine," Ellen said. "You go through me." Nyx raised one hand. Two fingers touched, ready to snap. Ellen's stomach dropped. She had no plan for this. No wall, no rifle, no fire would stop a god. But Dracula moved. He did not shield Ellen. He stepped between Nyx and the road, coat spread. "Not tonight," he said. "I owe this ground a debt for a debt paid clean. One favor. Then I am gone." Nyx's white eyes shifted to him. The two of them stared. The frozen dust hung between them like held breath. "One night," Nyx said at last. The fingers lowered. "For the vampire's word. But I mark this place. I will come for the nest when he cannot stand in the road." It turned and walked back into the dark. The dust began to fall again. The lamp flame guttered and caught. Dracula looked at Ellen. "You have until it returns," he said. "That is all I bought you." He pulled his coat tight and walked the other way, gone before she found words. Ellen stood in the road with Cade. The Mandarin was gone. The pale man was gone. Her house was clear. But a god had marked her home now, and it would come back the night no one guarded the road.
