Chapter 31

Night came slow. Ellen sat in the dark lobby with her women. No lamps burned. No guns showed. The ledger was gone to the dry well, far from her door. She had made her house look like nothing. Now she waited to learn if the god would believe it. The air changed first. It grew cold and still. The candles the women held died at once, though no wind touched them. Then the door stood open. No one had opened it. Nyx walked in. The god looked small. Pale skin, long blue hair, a robe stitched with stars. But the floor cracked under each step. The stone knew what walked on it, even if the eyes did not. Nyx stopped in the middle of the room and turned in a slow circle, reading the space. "A house," Nyx said. The voice was flat and young and wrong. "Empty walls. No fort. No fight." The white eyes swept the women crouched by the stairs. "You hid the loud thing. You made yourselves quiet." Ellen's chest went tight. The ruse was seen. She had traded her walls for silence, and the god had heard the silence for what it was. "You are clever," Nyx said. "That is worse than power. Power I break and forget. Cleverness I remember." The god raised one small hand. "I came for a nest. I find a woman who moved the bait and dressed her people as dust. You did not stop caring. You only hid it better." Ellen stood. Her legs shook but she stood. "Then take me. Not them." "No," Nyx said. "I take the hope. All of it." The hand began to close. Ellen did not reach for a gun. There was none that mattered. She stepped between the god and the stairs, arms wide, blocking the white eyes from her women. "You want the last hope in this house," she said. "It's me. I brought them here. I'll keep bringing them. Kill me and you kill the nest. Leave me and you have to come back forever." The hand stopped. Nyx studied her. The floor stopped cracking. For a long moment the god weighed her, the way Vincent weighed her, only colder. "You offer yourself as the target," Nyx said. "You make the choice small. One life or a chore without end." The white eyes narrowed. "I hate a chore." The cold lifted. The door swung shut on its own. Nyx was gone. The candles caught again in the women's hands. Ellen dropped to her knees. She was alive. They were all alive. But the god had not forgiven her. It had grown bored of one small house and gone looking for a louder one. She knew where the ledger sat now. Far off, at the dry well, loud as a bell. And she had sent it there herself.
